How to install a custom cursor on Windows
About ten minutes for a full pointer theme.
- 1
Get a cursor pack
Browse Cusmize cursor packs or trusted theme sites. Look for ZIP archives with .cur (static) or .ani (animated) files.
Tip: Complete themes often include Normal, Help, Working, and Text Select pointers.
- 2
Extract the files
Unzip into a folder you will keep, for example Documents\Cursors. Do not delete the folder after applying - Windows needs the files to stay in place.
Tip: Some packs include an Install.inf - right-click it and choose Install for a one-click theme.
- 3
Open pointer settings
Windows 11: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings. Windows 10: Settings → Devices → Mouse → Additional mouse options.
Tip: You can also search “mouse pointer style” in the Start menu on Windows 11.
- 4
Apply each pointer role
In the Pointers tab, select a role (Normal, Busy, etc.), click Browse, and pick the matching .cur or .ani file. Save with OK.
Tip: Use “Use Default” anytime to restore Windows system cursors.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 paths
The Pointers dialog is the same - only the Settings menu location changes.
Windows 11
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings → Pointers
Windows 10
Settings → Devices → Mouse → Additional mouse options → Pointers
Why change your Windows pointer?
Desktop-wide style
Unlike browser extensions, system cursors follow you across apps, the desktop, and most programs.
Easier to track
High-contrast or larger pointers help on 4K monitors and during long work sessions.
Per-user setting
No administrator rights are required - each Windows profile keeps its own pointer theme.
Animated options
Windows supports .ani animated cursors for busy states, loading, and playful themes.
Prefer cursors only in the browser?
Cursor Trail and other Cusmize extensions run inside Chrome or Edge - no system files required.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
- Yes. Both versions use the same Pointer settings dialog. Only the path to open Settings differs slightly, as noted in our step-by-step section.
- Can I use animated cursors?
- Yes. Animated pointers use the .ani format. Assign them to roles like Busy or Working in the Pointers tab.
- How do I go back to the default cursor?
- Open Mouse Properties → Pointers → Use Default, or choose Windows Aero cursors from C:\Windows\Cursors.
- Are browser extensions the same as Windows cursors?
- No. Chrome extensions such as Cursor Trail only affect websites inside the browser. For system-wide pointers, use Windows themes or cursor packs.
- Where should I download packs from?
- Start with Cusmize packs on this site, or use reputable communities you trust. Scan downloads with your antivirus before opening.
